I emailed out a copy of Laura Getty's "Maidens and Their Guardians: Reinterpreting the Rapunzel Tale." You can also find it by searching for the title on the WMU Library site.

I also emailed out this link to the Grimm Brothers' version of "Rapunzel": http://www.authorama.com/grimms-fairy-tales-16.html

Supplementary Readings for
Un Lun Dun (optional)

During our discussion of Un Lun Dun, we referenced a few scholars' ideas. If you're interested, here is the detailed information about them. For those without links, just search for the titles on the WMU Library site.

Kirsten Tranter: "An Interview with China Mieville."

Joe Sanders: "Reinventing Subjectivity: China Mieville's Un Lun Dun and the Child Reader."

Dave Meslin: "The Antidote to Apathy" (deals with the "chosen one" trope):  http://www.ted.com/talks/dave_meslin_the_antidote_to_apathy

Supplementary Readings for The Giver and Number the Stars (optional)

I emailed out a copy of Don Latham's "Childhood Under Siege: Lois Lowry's Number the Stars and The Giver." You can also find it by searching for the title on the WMU Library site.

Supplementary Readings for American Born Chinese (required)

Here, you can read Gene Luen Yang's Printz Award winner speech (you'll have to scroll down to page 11): http://yalsa.ala.org/yals/yalsarchive/volume6/6n1_fall2007.pdf

...and here, you can see some of the images Yang refers to in this speech: http://youngadultliterature.wordpress.com/2011/11/14/stereotypes-in-american-born-chinese/

Here, you can find Scott McCloud's explanation of the gutter: http://brandednoise.com/2013/06/01/on-smart-narratives/
(Don't worry about the rest of this article; just focus on the scans from McCloud.)

...and here, you can find his work on transitions: http://thesequentialpress.wordpress.com/2012/01/19/transitions/

Here is a link to Molly Bang's presentation on "how pictures work": http://www.nhsdesigns.com/pdfs/graphic_ss_picture-this.pdf

Supplementary Reading for Anne of Green Gables (optional)

If you're interested in Anne of Green Gables, I would highly recommend checking out Temma F. Berg's article "Anne of Green Gables: A Girl's Reading" in Children's Literature Association Quarterly Volume 13, Number 3 (Fall 1988). We will discuss some parts of the article in class, but you may find it useful to read the whole thing (though be aware, it does contain some spoilers!). You can find it by searching for the article title on the WMU Library site. Let me know if you have trouble accessing it.
